5 Holiday Gift Wrapping Ideas From The Home

By Penelope Perez

You don’t need to spend more money on gift wrapping supplies for the holidays. If you’re on a budget and want to avoid store crowds, take a look at these creative gift wrapping ideas using what you have you at home.

Break out the gift bags you’ve received in the past. There is nothing wrong in repurposing them for someone else’s gift. A gift bag is only used to conceal the contents and saves time on gift wrapping. Remove the attached gift tag if it’s already been used.

Repurpose past holiday cards to use as handmade gift tags. Use the images on the front of the cards or the holiday greetings inside the card. Cut it out with decorative scissors and punch a hole through it. String a ribbon, yarn or twine through the hole and attach it to a gift bag or wrapped gift.

Use tissue paper, magazines and brown paper bags to wrap up smaller gift items. Add embellishments using what you have at home to decorate the wrapped gifts. Try using fabric scraps, scrapbook supplies, extra garland and candy canes. Have tape or a glue gun handy.

Make your own gift baskets by using empty baskets and boxes around the house as the base of your gift. Get creative using photo boxes, shoe boxes and cereal boxes. Shred up magazine pages or paper that you don’t need. These strips of paper will be used to fill the basket or box so that your gift item doesn’t sink to the bottom. Instead of cellophane, try using gift wrapping paper or fabric that you have on hand.

Create a fabric gift bag using pillow cases you don’t need or want. Use your creativity by decorating the pillow cases with Sharpie markers, fabric markers or fabric paint. Embellish these handmade gift bags by gluing on plastic Christmas flowers, buttons and fabric tags. Use a thick ribbon or fabric strip to tie up your fabric gift bag.
